Hair loss presents in numerous patterns, and it is important to differentiate the various causes of hair loss.

It is imperative that an accurate diagnosis is made, although often this can be done with further testing.  Sometimes a diagnosis is elicited using hair clippings or a small piece of skin from the scalp (scalp biopsy).

The causes of alopecia can be as common as:

  • Male or Female Balding – Androgenic Alopecia
  • To more medical conditions such as Alopecia Areata (a sudden onset of smooth patches of hair loss) or Discoid Lupus Erythematosus.
  • Fungal infection of the hair
  • Lichen Planus affecting the scalp due to stress, post pregnancy or extreme dieting or medications.

Each form of Alopecia requires specific management and treatment based on the patient’s diagnosis.  The practice offers topical treatments, injections, PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections and phototherapy.
